The port of San Cristobal has been in commercial operation for more than a century. In 1997, the Panama Ports Company began the process of transforming the dock to adapt it to the new needs of world trade, i.e. for the transport of containerised cargo.

At the end of the construction works, the port will have 3,321.70 m of berthing frontage and a total storage capacity of 86,982 slots or 521,892 TEU. The port will be able to receive both Panamax and Post Panamax vessels. It will have a cruise terminal, which will include a commercial and craft centre for tourists.
