Marsa el Brega is a significant industrial port located on the Gulf of Sirte, at the southernmost point of the Mediterranean.

The activities of supply vessels began in 1961. Later, a refinery and a natural gas liquefaction plant were built, and in 1977, an ammonia conversion plant was inaugurated. The port is becoming the main petrochemical hub of Libya.
