Construction of the bridge began in 1925, although it was opened in 1927. It is one of four vehicle bridges spanning the Niagara River at the Canadian border. It has a riveted steel superstructure with reinforced concrete deck slabs and a concrete wearing course.

The bridge currently has three lanes, with capacity for heavy goods vehicles. The centre lane is reversible, allowing two lanes to operate in the same direction during peak hours. More than 5,400,000 cars crossed this bridge in 2015, making it the second busiest point on the US-Canada border.
